Become a Member

Help us create lasting value.

Although we are a volunteer organization, we are committed to excellence and professionalism. When individuals become a member of The Oratorio Society of Virginia, they agree to rigorous training, weekly rehearsals, and participation in yearly concerts. While membership requires dedication to the craft, the rewards are enormous. Being a member of our ensemble allows you to become part of a community of singers who are united by a love of music and a desire to grow as artists.

Weekly Meetings

Weekly rehearsals take place Mondays from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Municipal Arts Center, 1119 5th St SW, Charlottesville. Dress rehearsals prior to a concert will take place at the concert venue. Rehearsals consist of warm-ups followed by practicing musical phrasing, dynamics, and correcting errors led by our Music Director Michael Slon. Singers are asked to be prepared to learn notes outside of regular rehearsal times so that the joint rehearsals can focus on making beautiful music together.

If selected via audition, members are expected to attend every meeting, unless specific arrangements are made with the Music Director.

Membership

Each singer in the ensemble pays an annual membership dues fee, which are determined by the Board of Directors each year.

For the current season the annual dues are as follows:

  • Individual member: $100

  • Family (2 from the same household): $150

  • Student (high school, college, or grad student): $50

Membership fees must be paid in full within the first month of the season unless special arrangements are made.

If an interested singer is unable to pay, for any reason, The Oratorio Society offers scholarships based on financial need. We are committed to getting your voice into our chorus, regardless of any financial limitation.

“It is very uplifting and fulfilling to me to be a part of this great group of singers all making music together. I really look forward to our rehearsals each week!”

Sign up for an audition.

Auditions are by appointment only and usually last around 10 minutes. Auditions consist of simple exercises to determine vocal range, as well as sight-reading, pitch matching, and rhythmic skills. You may also bring a prepared solo if you wish.
